A stop at Swan Hill and the Catalina Boats

Didn’t know what to do from there.  We wanted to end up at Broken Hill, but decided it was too long a journey in one day.  We ummed and aaahed  about whether to stay at Swan Hill or Mildura, and based on the tourist guides plumped for Swan Hill.   Ooooo big mistake.  Got there at midday to find it was closed.  I mean everything was closed, all the shops, restaurants etc - the whole town.  Half day on a Saturday, what planet are they on.

But the drive up was lovely with an amazing finish - the whole area is covered in fruit and vegetable farms, apple trees everywhere, it smelt wonderful.  They are really careful about keep out diseases, and as you cross over borders, you had to stop the car and bin all your stuff.  We could understand it when you when through miles of apples trees - it would devastate a crop like this.

The Catalina Flying Boats at Lake Boga

Just before Swan Hill is Lake Boga, and the Catalina Flying Boat museum. The Japanese bombed Darwin and Broome in 1942, where they destroyed all but a few of the flying boat squadron. It was then decided to move the repair and refurbishment of these flying boats to Lake Boga, which is this huge round body of water.  The museum was fascinating and we were glad we stopped.  It would have been just fabulous to have flown in one of these amazing aircraft.

We booked into our motel unit in Swan Hill and found a supermarket that was open and then retired to the small pool.  Great until two families turned up and took over the pool, screaming and shouting.  Don’t get me wrong, I love kids, but these ones are loud and screamy, and with parents who were loud and screamy – Rod was po-faced.  Anyway they  buggered off to MacDonalds at 7pm and we had a BBQ, drank too much rather bad red wine.
We left early the next morning for Broken Hill.
