Tuesday 15th January – Broken Hill to Burra
So here we are reluctantly leaving Broken Hill, wending our way back
down to Adelaide. We decided to stop over for a few nights in a
place called Burra.
The drive was absolutely beautiful – I find it hard to
describe the dry beauty of South Australia, we are both completely taken with
the place. Everywhere we go is just
stunning. Whole landscapes of golden
wheat and golden merino sheep. We saw
numerous emus, but not much of anything else, including people and cars. It’s
delight to drive in.

There were a few hamlets along the way, but no towns. At Yunta we stopped for coffee at a petrol
station and got talking to the owners, friendly people.
A really solitary life out here – All there was, was the petrol station
and a Hotel (pub). We asked about how
many people were in the region, and frequented his place to be told… 38! The rest of his business was travellers like
us. Not sure he is going to make his
fortune and we only saw about 3 cars the whole day. Fascinating to talk to him.
We arrived in Burra early afternoon and went to the
information centre to pick up the keys to our cottage. There had been a mistake with the booking,
but it worked out to our advantage and we were given the keys to a wonderful
little miners cottage called the Pig and Whistle, which was much nearer to the
town centre and cheaper. It was
great.
Helen the owner of the cottage gave us a call and asked us
around to here cottage which is just outside the town. We sat on her verandah walking a kangeroo
and her baby eating the lawn. What a
lovely start to our stay in Burra.
