Wednesday 16th January –The Clare Valley
It is now nearly five weeks and half way into our trip and today we have decided to stay put in Burra for three nights and use it as a base for
our tour around the wine regions.
Today we drove to the Clare Valley starting off in through Saddleworth, then Riverton, up to Auburn, Clare Town and then the wine tasting
begins. Janette has been volunteered to
drive!
It was strange driving through a fertile landscape of vineyards, after all the desert we had seen, just amazing what water can produce.
The Clare Valley is famous for
their dry Rieslings. We tried a few ateach of the vineyards we stopped at, but
have to say they are not our choice. We
did pick a bottle of Red Viognier, really unusual and very different.
Our first stop was O’Leary Walker Wines at a beautiful spot overlooking the valley. The vineyard and buildings were very contemporary and Rod tried quite a long there. We did pick a bottle of Red Viognier, really unusual and very different.

The second vineyard was Crabtree Watervale - what a lovely place. , I had read lots of great reviews about this tiny vineyard and it was lovely. Again we did try a couple of Rieslings and in the end we did buy a bottle, one of their award winning.
The last stop was Annie Lane’s, I had read lots of great reviews about this vineyard and it was lovely. Again we did try a couple of Rieslings but in the end we bought a fab bottle of pink.
That was enough for us, and we drove home through the fieldsquite content.
In the evening we went out for dinner at La Pecora Negro
(the Black Sheep) and had one of the best pizzas ever.
What a nice day ---- and more to come
So, what was so good about the pizza?
