Mount Gambier

Saturday 26th

We had busy day today - first it was Port MacDonnell - tiny fishing/seaside place, really pretty - not alot there until we drove up the coast road and hit the most amazing scenery.

What can you say!

This whole area is an ancient volcanic landscape.  We drove from Port McDonnell to Mount Schank, a collapsed volcano, which you can walk to the drop of and around, but it's a toughy.  We just drove to the bottom instead.

There are a lot of limestone sink holes in the area caused by water wearing away the rock and then collapsing into cave.  We went to one called the Umpherston Sink hole which in Victorian times was turned into a garden - they tended to do things like that! absolutely beautiful.

And lastly, the reason most people just stop in Mount Gambier is to see the blue lake - and it is really this colour.  It's caused by the minerals in the water, and changes colour throughout the year.

This whole area is fascinating, and there is so much more to see, you could stay a week.   We just touched the surface - it was brilliant.
