On the road to Port Fairy

Sunday 27th January

We left Mount Gambier feeling that there was still a lot more to see in the area, which is a good feeling. But it was time to move on towards the Great Ocean Road and then Melbourne.   Our stop today was Port Fairy and we had a leisurely drive down the coast through Portland and lovely scenery.

Port Fairy is just a tiny holiday place,  quite up market and a little twee, but a lovely place to stop for a couple of nights.   Again I was here 16 years ago, but don’t remember much, I don't think we would have stayed here,in a backpacker bus.

We were lucky with the accommodation and found a lovely cabin for ourselves to stay in called the Overnighter.  I would really recommend it if you are down that way - great for two  people.

Port Fairy is full of restaurants, coffee shops and  shops where you are likely to spend far too much money.  It has a river side full of smart summer houses.

Near where we were staying there is a small causeway you can walk across to Granite Island - we walked over late afternoon and saw wallabies and loads of birds.  The island has a colony of Sheerwaters who only come back after dark to feed there young.  They nest in burrowed holes in the ground, and you could hear the young squeaking inside, waiting for them to return.
