Bright and Beauty

Wednesday 9th

Today’s blog might be quite long as we had a day’s driving to the Alpine National Park and back along the Great Alpine Road, and I might rant on about how lovely it was.  Ooo arrr the scenery and like.  We woke up to 25 degrees and it felt like a English summer’s day….  Perfect for a hike up a mountain.

We set off early to the wonderfully named Yackandanda for coffee and a walk around.  The guy in the information place, was the twin of the one at Beechworth yesterday, unless they clone them around there!  Checked there was no fires to be aware of and set off for the hills.  This is another small mining town, beautifully preserved.

Then on to Tawonga before driving around Mount Beauty to Bright, a ski town.  Very strange driving through warm countryside with ski boot hire signs everywhere.  A quick stop at Porepunkah before a drive through Mount Buffalo National Park and up the mountain.  Quite a hike, hairpin bends etc,  but worth every minute.

The scenery was stunning, the trees majestic, the hairpin bends hairaising, the waterfalls wonderful and we only saw the foothills - hopefully we will get back to another part of it on our return to Sydney.

Back through Myrtleworth to our cabin.

How about that for an open road
The Beechworth Café in Beechworth is an institution in this area, so we had to give it a go.   They do wonderful cakes and pastries, and one in particular  which is called a Beesting - a cake bun, with lots of cream and thick custard - divine.  We just had to go back for another try, just to make sure.

  1. Ah Beestings are amazing! We have a Beechworth bakery in Ballarat, definitely on the cards for when I get back!
