On the Road Again

We had a change of plan at this point, due mainly to a big tennis tournament in Melbourne at the time we were planning to arrive.  Instead of heading down to the coast, we decided to go inland instead.  It was a great decision in the wake of the weather and forest fires that ensued after that!  It's so dreadful for the people in its path.

Instead we headed out for a town called Beechworth, a historic Gold mining down up in the hills of Victoria.

We braved the 15 minute rush hour of Canberra, round and round the roundabouts, through the government area, and then out into the country.

Our first stop was Yass, a country town in a great farming area, and famous for where Kate grew up on thefamily farm, and which I visited the first time ever to Australia.  We stopped for coffee said hello to the place and carried onto the Hume Highway.

Quiet in the Country

It then started to  get hotter and hotter! We stopped at Tarcutta which again is  famed for being half way between Melbourne and Adelaide!  We had lunch, watching firemen testing out fire equipment - things to come.

Then on to Holbrook famed for having a submarine in the centre of town.... yes a full submarine, picture to prove it.  It seemed that the Captain was from Holbrook, so some bright spark decided it was worth dragging across country to turn into a cafe.  But it makes you stop in town for a look.

Yes, it is really there
We arrived in lovely Beechworth in the afternoon to our lovely cabin, right in the centre of town, complete with two cats, cockatoos and numerous cicardas.
